In a promising development for local businesses, the opening of a £25 million Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) in Plymouth is anticipated to invigorate trade by boosting footfall in the area. Set to launch on June 23, this state-of-the-art facility aims to cater to 300-350 appointments daily, creating a hub of activity that local traders hope will translate into increased business opportunities.

Business owners in the vicinity have expressed optimism regarding the potential impacts of the new health hub. Aurel Mani, owner of Coffee Time, highlighted that the extended hours of operation until 8 PM will mean more potential customers in the area. This uplift in attendance comes at a crucial time, as traders have noted a decline in foot traffic due to ongoing construction along Armada Way.
Strengthening the Community
Adam Fielder, representing AHF Workwear, echoed similar sentiments, expressing hope that the CDC would draw a significant number of visitors, which could, in turn, revitalize local markets and restaurants. “With approximately 700 people expected daily, we anticipate that this influx will allow more opportunities for browsing and dining,” he noted.

Ray Robins, chairman of the Plymouth Market Traders Association, highlighted the collaborative discussions taking place between the NHS and local traders. The notion of pre-orders and deliveries was introduced, which could foster further synergy between health services and the local economy. "All in all, it was a very, very positive meeting," Robins stated, indicating a shared enthusiasm for enhancing community interactions.

The CDC aims not only to alleviate pressure on Derriford Hospital but also to support early diagnosis and improve accessibility to healthcare services. Nicki Collas, deputy director for the Future Hospital Programme at UHP, emphasized that the strategic placement of the CDC is designed to encourage visitors to combine healthcare appointments with everyday activities, thereby enhancing the vibrancy of the local economy. "This increased footfall is essential for the sustainability of our high streets while delivering healthcare more effectively," she asserted.
