Exciting News: UK-Grown Strawberries are Making Their Grand Debut!
After recent days of bright sunshine and warm temperatures, UK-grown strawberries are finally set to hit supermarket shelves, offering a delightful taste of summer that many have been eagerly anticipating. Starting Friday, punnets filled with these succulent berries will be available in select Tesco stores across Surrey, Kent, Herefordshire, and parts of London, with a further rollout expected next week.
The Sweet Taste of Summer Arrives Early
Tesco has announced that it expects to receive an impressive 300 tonnes of UK-grown strawberries next week, doubling the volume available just three weeks ago. This increase means that the much-loved fruit will soon be widely available throughout the entire UK by mid-May, reducing the reliance on imports from Spain and Morocco.
Perfect Growing Conditions Yield Quality Berries
According to Tesco strawberry buyer Callum Baker, the start of the outdoor British strawberry season symbolizes a joyful moment in the retail calendar, indicating that summer is just around the corner and promising months of outdoor enjoyment. With the perfect conditions for strawberry growth, combining cool nights and warm sunny days, the grocery chain predicts that the UK strawberry availability will be around 40% next week.
Hope for a Flavorful Season Ahead
Neil Donaldson, the commercial director of Hall Hunter, a prominent strawberry grower, shared optimism about the season, noting a 30% increase in strawberry production from their farms due to the favorable weather forecast. The strawberry variety being introduced to Tesco is the Lady Emma, recognized for its large size and sweet flavor, with punnets priced at £2.50.
Bartosz Pinkosz, operations director at The Summer Berry Company, echoed these sentiments by highlighting the quality of this year’s berries. He mentioned that the strawberry plants benefited from additional time on the vine due to irregular weather patterns in March, resulting in especially sweet fruit. As the outdoor strawberry season unfolds, expectations are high for delicious, quality strawberries that will delight consumers.
