Exciting Revitalization in Stroud: New Flats Set to Transform the Town

Recently approved plans to invest approximately £3 million in transforming an empty building in Stroud's town centre into 16 new flats promise to bring positive change to the community. The building, known as Stroud House, has been vacant since 2023, when it was last home to the Atlantic Games shop and the Gateway to India convenience store. Tony Davey, chair of the Stroud and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, expressed his satisfaction with the development, stating, “Having buildings left empty and without purpose is rarely a good thing. It is positive news that this building is set to be put into gainful use.” He highlighted the architectural and historical value of the structure and mentioned planned improvements to the surrounding area, which should help rectify prior neglect.

The Town Council's Perspective

A spokesperson from Stroud Town Council echoed these sentiments, noting the benefits of having a long-term purpose for the building. Cate James-Hodges, a Green district councillor for Stroud Central, voiced her disappointment, stressing the need for affordable options in the housing market to ensure that local residents can thrive in their hometown. She called for changes in legislation to require developers to include affordable housing in their projects.
