Exciting Road Plans Set to Revive Watchet's Economy

Civic leaders in Watchet are celebrating the announcement of a new roadway project that promises to significantly enhance the town's economic prospects. After more than three years of disruption due to the closure of the B3191 coastal road, plans are now in place to construct a new route that local officials believe will reinvigorate foot traffic and business in the area.

A Welcome Development

The B3191, which connects Watchet to Blue Anchor, was closed in January 2023 due to safety concerns related to coastal erosion. Following the closure, the town experienced a drastic reduction in visitors, with many local businesses reporting up to a 70% drop in customer footfall. Town mayor Loretta Whetlor expressed her enthusiasm, declaring the decision to build a new road to be "the best news we could have had".

The Plan Ahead

The new route is projected to cost approximately £40 million, with funding expected to partly stem from the government's Structures Fund, aimed at upgrading local infrastructure. The council has proposed a 1,970ft (600m) bypass around the crumbling Cleeve Hill, which would allow safer access to Watchet and stabilize areas of eroding cliff.

Community Support and Future Outlook

Local officials, including John Richards from Watchet's chamber of commerce, are hopeful that the new road will restore visitor numbers. "We've waited a long time for something to happen," he stated, reflecting the determination of the community to recover from the setback of the road closure. The council plans to submit a funding bid to the government soon and remains optimistic about securing the necessary financial support.

The Structures Fund was established to assist councils in England with road upgrades, indicating a significant opportunity for Watchet to enhance its transport links while encouraging tourism and economic growth. If successful, the project must be finalized by 2030, marking a calculated yet ambitious step towards revitalizing the town.
