Exciting Summer Feeding Program Ensures No Child Goes Hungry

The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) has unveiled its 2026 Summer Feeding Program, aimed at providing free nutritious meals to children in the community while schools are closed. This initiative is particularly significant as it seeks to combat food insecurity during the summer months when many students may not have access to regular meals.

Comprehensive Meal Solutions for All

LPSS is committed to ensuring that all children aged 18 and younger have access to healthy meals, regardless of their income or school enrollment status. With a combination of onsite meal service and a non-congregate meal box distribution program, LPSS is tackling the barriers that some families face in accessing food. The meal boxes, filled with shelf-stable breakfast and lunch items for an entire week, empower families to pick up meals and take them home, making it easier for those with transportation challenges.

Details on Meal Distribution

Starting June 3 and running through July 8, families can pick up these meal boxes every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at designated schools including Charles Burke Elementary and Duson Elementary. This convenient setup not only simplifies the process for families but also reinforces LPSS's commitment to community well-being. Registration for meal boxes is straightforward, requiring only a one-time sign-up, and remains open while supplies last.

A Commitment to Nourishment

In addition to the meal boxes, LPSS will operate cafeterias at participating summer feeding sites, offering onsite breakfast and lunch throughout the summer. This dual approach ensures that children have ample opportunities to get the nutrition they need to stay active and healthy, preparing them for their return to school in the fall. LPSS Director of Child Nutrition, Catherine Cassidy, expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its importance in maintaining children's health and readiness for learning.

The Summer Feeding Program serves as a vital resource for families in Lafayette Parish, reflecting the dedication of LPSS to not only educate but also nourish its students. This initiative reinforces the idea that ensuring proper nutrition is essential for educational success, echoing the district's broader commitment to fostering a supportive community for all children.
