Exciting Times Ahead: EuroHockey Championships 2027 Set to Inspire the Next Generation
Wales international Fred Newbold is gearing up to use the 2027 EuroHockey Championships as a platform to inspire young athletes and grow the sport of hockey beyond its current boundaries. Following a momentous victory at the 2025 European Championship II in Portugal, which secured qualification for the main tournament, Newbold's enthusiasm is palpable as he shares his vision for the event.
Igniting the Passion for Hockey
In a recent interview, Newbold expressed his excitement about the championships taking place at Harlequins’ Twickenham Stoop, stating, “Having the opportunity to play in any international tournament is fantastic, but this one, obviously, being at home, in the UK... it’s great for us.” His personal journey has been influenced by past experiences watching significant tournaments, and he is hopeful that the championship will be a catalyst for the next generation.
“It helps when you’re a young kid and you realise you can play hockey in all of these big stadiums,” he added, emphasizing the importance of visibility in encouraging youth participation in the sport.
Championship Features and Community Impact
The EuroHockey Championships, scheduled for 28 July to 8 August 2027, will showcase 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, as well as Hockey ID teams, creating a vibrant atmosphere at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre and culminating with finals at The Stoop. This unprecedented format not only promises to showcase talent but also aims to make the sport more accessible to diverse audiences. Tickets will go on sale in Spring 2026, with a pricing strategy designed to welcome as many community members as possible.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
Former England and Great Britain captain, Alex Danson-Bennett, highlights that the event is geared towards making hockey more inclusive: “This event is about opening the doors to hockey, giving more people the chance to experience our sport live.” With support from UK Sport's Esther Britten, who emphasizes the return of a major international event to England since 2018, the championships are positioned to leave a lasting legacy.
EuroChamps27 promises not just thrilling sports but also a celebration of community spirit and opportunity. As the countdown begins for this remarkable event, the prospects for hockey's future seem brighter than ever.
