Experience the UK's First Pop-Up Sauna Theatre This Summer!

This August, Edinburgh will witness a unique confluence of art and wellness as the UK's first sauna theatre opens at the Summerhall arts venue. Dubbed "Sauna Theatre," this pop-up sauna promises to delight audiences with an innovative blend of theatrical performances and the invigorating benefits of sauna.

A New Frontier in the Arts

Sauna Theatre aims to enhance the cultural landscape by merging the heat of the sauna with various artistic events. Visitors can expect an array of activities, from literary salons to “morning sauna raves,” where they can don their swimwear and immerse themselves in an environment designed to entertain and rejuvenate.

The Vision Behind Sauna Theatre

Created by co-creative directors James Grieve and Lucy Osborne, Sauna Theatre is more than just a venue; it is a celebration of the therapeutic aspects of sauna and the creative power of theatre. Grieve expressed their excitement, saying, "We think combining the enrichment of art and culture with the incredible health and wellbeing boost of sauna will double the benefits and double the joy." This initiative promises to ignite imaginations and foster connections among participants.

Innovative Programming

The 80-seat sauna will feature a horseshoe configuration set around traditional stoves, allowing for intimate and immersive experiences. Among the highlights will be "Aufguss x The Waves," an imaginative reworking of Virginia Woolf's masterpiece, as well as "Mysteries Of The Picts," which promises to explore ancient Scottish tales.

A Thrilling Collaboration

Sam Gough, chief executive of Summerhall Arts, noted the ambitious nature of this project, asserting that it represents a "brilliant, brave and fun programme" that beautifully aligns with their creative vision. The collaboration aims to provide audiences with a relaxing escape while experiencing groundbreaking performances that stimulate both the body and the mind.

Tickets for this unique experience will become available on May 6, offering an opportunity not just to see theatre but to experience it in a completely new way. As Edinburgh prepares for the Fringe, the Sauna Theatre stands out as a refreshing and innovative addition to the arts scene, inviting everyone to come together, unwind, and be inspired.
