Experience the UK's First Sauna Theatre: A Revolutionary Concept for Art and Wellness

This summer, Edinburgh is set to unveil a unique cultural phenomenon with the introduction of the UK's first Sauna Theatre. Situated in the courtyard of the Summerhall arts venue, this pop-up sauna promises to blend the invigorating benefits of sauna with artistic expression in an extraordinary way.

An Engaging Programme of Events

From literary salons to the innovative “morning sauna rave,” attendees will be invited to embrace the heat and engage with a variety of stimulating events. The Sauna Theatre aims to create an immersive experience that combines Aufguss — a practice using heat, essential oils, and storytelling — with the joys of theatre.

The Visionaries Behind the Concept

Co-creators James Grieve and Lucy Osborne have expressed their excitement about this groundbreaking venture, stating, "We think combining the enrichment of art and culture with the incredible health and wellbeing boost of sauna will double the benefits and double the joy." Their commitment to merging theatre with wellness aims to foster connections, ignite imaginations, and contribute to an overall sense of happiness.

A Unique Space for Artistic Expression

The 80-seat Sauna Theatre features a horseshoe configuration around steaming stoves, enhancing the viewing experience while allowing for a communal atmosphere. The rich programme will also include innovative adaptations like Aufguss x The Waves, offering a fresh take on Virginia Woolf's masterpiece, and Mysteries of the Picts, exploring ancient Scottish narratives.

A New Frontier in the Arts

While sauna theatres have a long-standing tradition in parts of Europe, such as Italy and Scandinavia, Grieve notes that this initiative is a pioneering step for the UK theatre scene. "We’re really good at making theatre, so the excitement for us is introducing our incredible theatre industry to sauna as a new space in which to make work and to take audiences on magical journeys," he adds.

Sam Gough, chief executive of Summerhall Arts, also shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that this ambitious project will produce a thrilling and innovative programme. "Imagine spending the Fringe ingesting this great work whilst expelling all of the stress and toxins from your body. Sheer genius," he remarked.

Get Ready for a Transformative Experience

As tickets for this revolutionary concept go on sale, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an exhilarating summer at the Fringe. The Sauna Theatre is not just an event; it’s an invitation to relax, rejuvenate, and be inspired through an unprecedented marriage of art and wellness.
