In a remarkable display of familial dedication to history and heritage, Eric and Mia Ballinger from Bend, Oregon, have received the prestigious Oregon Heritage Excellence Award for their efforts to commemorate the sacrifices of Oregon's Nisei veterans from World War II. The award was presented by the Oregon Heritage Commission on April 29, 2026, highlighting the importance of grassroots initiatives in preserving historical memory.

A Journey of Recognition

The father-daughter duo played a pivotal role in leading the coalition that advocated for the establishment of the Oregon Nisei Veterans WWII Memorial Highway Historical Marker. This designation honors the service of over 430 Oregon Nisei soldiers who fought valiantly during a time when their families faced considerable prejudice and discrimination due to Executive Order 9066.

The coalition, which included a diverse group of descendants of Nisei veterans as well as notable organizations such as the American Legion Post 22 and the Japanese American Museum of Oregon, worked tirelessly to ensure that this chapter of history would not be forgotten.
