From Imagination to Reality: An 8-Year-Old's Dream Train Comes to Life
An inspiring story from the Netherlands showcases how the creativity of children can lead to delightful real-world applications. This past year, eight-year-old Phileine from Zutphen won the NS Drawing Competition, where children were invited to submit their designs to decorate the exterior of a train.
A Record Number of Entries
The competition received an overwhelming response with over 1,200 submissions, highlighting the boundless imagination of Dutch children. Designs varied widely, featuring everything from jungle-themed trains filled with animals to whimsical flying locomotives, all of which embodied humor, fantasy, and adventure.
The Sweet Monster Train
Phileine's winning concept, titled the "Sweet Monster Train," features friendly and colorful monsters that crawl and slither along the train’s exterior, ensuring they are impossible to scare anyone. This innovative design was brought to life in collaboration with professional illustrator Jip Piet, using large decal stickers for application, eliminating the need for painting.
A Celebratory Opening
The culmination of Phileine's achievement took place at Utrecht’s Maliebaan station, where she, alongside her family, participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the intercity train. This event was attended by competition judge Daan Schutt, a board member of NS, illustrating the importance of community involvement in nurturing young talent.
Encouraging Playfulness in Travel
NS, the national train operator, aims to inspire children about train travel through imaginative exercises like this competition. "Children often experience a train journey as an adventure, much more than we sometimes realize as adults," a spokesperson stated. By actualizing a child's vision, NS shows how special travel can be when viewed through the innocent eyes of youth.
