From War to Achievement: A Ukrainian Teen’s Inspiring Journey in the UK
In a heartwarming story that highlights resilience and hope, Anastasiia Sochka, a teenager who fled the war in Ukraine, has excelled in her A-levels while adapting to a new life in the UK. Her outstanding results at English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Hartlepool mark a significant milestone not only in her academic journey but also as a beacon of hope for her family still facing challenges in Ukraine.
Academic Accomplishments Amid Adversity
Anastasiia achieved remarkable grades: an A* in Russian, an A in Psychology, and a B in Sociology. These results came as a pleasant surprise for her, particularly her performance in Psychology, which exceeded her own expectations. “I only expected a C – so it's a nice surprise,” she remarked, reflecting her determination and hard work despite the difficulties she encountered after moving to the UK in the summer of 2022.
A Call Filled with Joy
One of the most touching moments came when Anastasiia shared her results with her father, Andrew, who is currently serving in the Ukrainian army. She expressed her happiness, saying, “It was nice to be able to give him that good news because I wanted to make him happy.” This connection underscores the emotional weight of her academic achievements, not just for her, but for her family who are still navigating the hardships of war.
Support and Adaptation Through Education
Anastasiia's success story is bolstered by the support she received from her school, which played a crucial role in her adaptation. They provided her with resources such as translating materials into Ukrainian and helping her find a Russian tutor. This is an exemplary case of how educational institutions can positively impact the lives of students from diverse backgrounds and challenging circumstances.
Looking Toward the Future
With plans to study sociology at Newcastle University, Anastasiia aims to pursue a career dedicated to helping others, potentially as a social worker. Her aspirations are driven by a genuine desire to assist those suffering in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict. “Lots of people are struggling in Ukraine now because of poverty due to the war, and I want to be able to help them,” she stated. Anastasiia’s journey is a powerful reminder of the potential for personal growth and positive change even in the face of adversity.
