Groundbreaking Funding Scheme Set to Transform UK Horticulture Sector
In a positive turn for the struggling UK horticulture sector, a collaboration between the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and the British Ornamentals Association (BOA) is set to release over £334,000 in grants over the next three years. This initiative aims to support environmental horticulture growers, providing much-needed resources during a challenging business climate.
Supporting Collective Growth
The AHDB Funds Scheme for ornamentals, administered by HTA and BOA, utilizes the remaining balances of horticulture levy payments made by growers to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). This funding will not only facilitate research and development but also promote grower events and market initiatives that will benefit the sector as a whole.
A Collaborative Effort
David Denny, Director of Research & Knowledge Transfer at HTA, highlighted the significance of this opportunity, stating, "As UK growers face one of the most difficult business environments in decades, this scheme provides a welcome opportunity to support work to support growth in UK production." The collaboration aims to unlock funding and research capabilities, evidenced by existing projects with the RHS and Harper Adams University focused on innovative solutions such as wireless sensors for irrigation.
Unlocking Legacy Funds
Robin Squance, Chair of the British Ornamentals Association Technical Committee, expressed optimism regarding the initiative: "Finally, some positive news about the AHDB Horticulture residual funds... We invite growers to submit their requests that we know will benefit UK environmental horticulture production." This initiative seeks to ensure that the funds are utilized for projects that benefit the broader community rather than individual interests.
A Bright Future for UK Growers
With substantial allocations targeting various sectors—£247,533 for live ornamentals plant production, £53,521 for bulb production, and £33,450 for cut flower production—the scheme reflects a commitment to revitalizing the UK horticulture landscape. Growers are encouraged to participate in this funding opportunity, which seeks to foster innovation, enhance market development, and strengthen the collective efforts in the ornamentals sector.
