In an inspiring move to bolster mental health resources for its students, Runwell Community Primary School in Wickford has been awarded a significant £5,000 grant in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week. This funding is set to transform the school's approach to mental wellbeing, providing essential support to its pupils through the myHappyMind programme, which is commissioned by the NHS.

Commitment to Student Wellbeing

Charlotte Castle, Deputy Headteacher and Inclusion Manager, expressed pride in the school’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for children. “We’re proud to say, thanks to the new grant and our existing provision, our school is a space where children truly feel supported,” she remarked. The initiative aims to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate their emotions, thereby promoting resilience, confidence, and self-esteem.

Innovative Mental Health Resources

The grant will enable the school and its on-site nursery to implement a variety of mental health resources, which include an NHS-backed curriculum, a parent and carer wellbeing app, and a dedicated wellbeing programme for staff. This comprehensive approach not only addresses the needs of the students but also involves parents and educators in the vital conversation around mental health.

Empowering the Students

As part of the myHappyMind initiative, a group of pupils known as Happiness Heroes have been trained to support their peers' wellbeing during the school day. One of the young ambassadors highlighted the importance of the program, saying, “I think it’s important for everyone to feel happy, and I’m excited to help my friends and class feel good every day.” This peer-led aspect of the initiative is a significant step in building a supportive community within the school.
