Groundbreaking Partnership Promises Free Tax Filing for All in Volusia and Flagler Counties!

Starting with the 2026 tax year, residents of Volusia and Flagler counties will enjoy an unparalleled opportunity to file their tax returns for free, thanks to a collaborative effort spearheaded by a local nonprofit. This initiative aims to eliminate financial barriers and enhance financial stability for families in these communities.

A Community-Driven Initiative

As detailed in a recent press release from the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, this partnership will enable taxpayers to access free in-person appointments with trained volunteers beginning in early 2027. This is a significant shift from previous years, where free tax preparation services were limited to individuals below a certain income level.

Strengthening Financial Health

The foundation has emphasized its commitment to helping community members retain more of their earnings. Courtney Edgcomb, the president and CEO of the organization, remarked, “This partnership is the natural next step in our long‑standing commitment to helping our neighbors keep more of what they earn.” This collaborative effort also aims to bolster volunteer support and expand the reach of the existing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Impressive Achievements and Future Plans

The longstanding program has already made a significant impact over the past two decades, with volunteers completing over 44,000 tax returns and returning more than $50 million to local households. The recent tax season alone saw over 1,800 tax returns processed, generating upwards of $2.1 million in refunds for residents.

The partnership with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will bring additional resources to volunteers, including Chromebooks, mileage reimbursement, and various training opportunities. This includes a comprehensive five-day training course covering essential tax law and ethical practices.

Overall, the new initiative not only promises to enhance the financial well-being of residents but also strengthens the spirit of community support through volunteerism. It represents a forward-thinking approach to serve a broader audience and ensure that all taxpayers have access to the assistance they need.
