Groundbreaking Progress in Charitable Foundations: A Beacon of Hope for the Future
The latest Foundation Practice Rating (FPR) report has unveiled significant progress in the practices of UK charitable foundations, highlighting advancements in diversity, accountability, and transparency. This year marks the strongest results in the initiative’s five-year history, signaling a promising shift in the sector.
Record High Ratings in Charitable Practices
The annual assessment of 100 grant-making foundations in the UK revealed that 12 foundations achieved an overall A grade, the highest number recorded in a single year. Furthermore, three foundations received an A in each category of assessment—diversity, accountability, and transparency—an achievement previously attained by only one foundation in the last four years. Notably, this year saw the lowest number of foundations receiving a D grade across all three domains, a significant marker of improvement.
Voices of Change from Foundation Leaders
Danielle Walker Palmour, Director of the Friends Provident Foundation, which established the initiative to evaluate and enhance practices across the sector, stated, “These results show that as a sector, we're making headway. There's still work to do, but improvements have been made.” Walker Palmour emphasized that these advancements are encouraging for the charities that rely on these foundations for funding, ultimately benefiting the communities they serve.
Mission 44: Leading by Example
A standout among the foundations is Mission 44, founded by Sir Lewis Hamilton with the mission of fostering a fairer and more inclusive future for young people. The foundation has received top ratings across all evaluation criteria, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity in education and career opportunities in STEM fields. CEO Jason Arthur expressed pride in their achievements, stating that valuing diverse perspectives is central to their approach.
The Strength of Community Foundations
Community foundations have also been recognized for their outstanding performance, with all seven in this year’s cohort scoring an A or B overall. Emma de Closset, Chief Executive of UK Community Foundations, commented on the vital role these foundations play in their local communities, embracing values like trust and equity to ensure responsive funding that meets local needs.
As philanthropy and grant giving evolve, maintaining transparency and accountability remains paramount. While changes in the landscape present challenges, the commitment to funding not just the right causes but in the right manner is essential. The Foundation Practice Rating continues to encourage improvements across the sector, fostering an environment where charitable foundations can thrive.
