Gym Chains Are Leading the Way in EV Charging Accessibility

In exciting news for gym-goers and electric vehicle (EV) drivers alike, a recent study has highlighted significant advancements in EV charging accessibility across popular gym chains in the UK. The research, conducted by Drax Electric Vehicles, reveals that the best gyms for EV drivers are now more accessible than ever, providing a convenient solution for fitness enthusiasts who are also committed to sustainability.

Fitness First Takes the Lead

The standout performer, Fitness First, has been crowned the best gym chain for public EV charging availability. With an impressive 17.7% better access to EV chargers compared to the average gym in its city, Fitness First is setting a standard that others may aspire to emulate. Notably, 4 out of 5 Fitness First locations surpass city benchmarks for public EV charger availability, making it easier for members to charge their vehicles while they work out.

Growing Support from Leading Gym Chains

Following closely behind are Virgin Active and The Gym Group, with access to EV charging that exceeds local averages by 17.6% and 14%, respectively. This upward trend demonstrates a collective commitment among gym chains to make accessing fitness facilities more convenient for EV owners.

An Encouraging Future for EV Infrastructure

Adam Hall, Drax Energy Services Director, underscores the importance of expanding EV charging networks, stating, “These findings highlight the real-world benefits of developing a strong public charging network. It’s not just about powering vehicles—it’s about making everyday life more convenient.” Indeed, as electric vehicle adoption increases, the availability of charging at essential destinations like gyms becomes crucial for encouraging more drivers to consider the switch to electric.

Northern Cities Lead in EV Charging Access

The study also reveals that northern cities are outperforming London in EV charging access near gym locations. With Manchester leading the pack, boasting an average of 173 chargers within 1 mile of each gym, the trend signifies a regional push towards sustainability that could inspire further developments across the country.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Several gym chains are taking initiative in bolstering their sustainability efforts, with David Lloyd and Bannatyne integrating on-site EV charging stations as part of their facilities. While this represents a positive step forward, there remains a call for continued improvement in charging availability, especially in urban centers where access may still be limited.

This study serves as a promising indicator of the evolving relationship between fitness and sustainable transport, showcasing how gyms can play a pivotal role in easing the transition to electric vehicles. As the landscape of mobility continues to change, those in the fitness industry are making strides toward a greener future by ensuring that their facilities are equipped to meet the needs of modern drivers.
