Heartwarming Transformation: Southport School Triumphs with Inspiring Playground Initiative

In a remarkable display of resilience and community spirit, Churchtown Primary School in Southport has been honored with the Inspiring Play Award at the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. This recognition comes in the wake of the tragic loss of two pupils, Alice da Silva Aguiar and Bebe King, who were lost during a dance workshop in 2024.

Turning Grief into Hope

Instead of succumbing to sorrow, the Churchtown community channeled their grief into a powerful initiative aimed at honoring the memory of Alice and Bebe. Through a series of engaging pupil-driven fundraising activities, the school managed to raise an impressive £380,000. This generous amount will be used to construct a new playground that embodies the spirit of unstructured and child-led play, ensuring that the legacy of the two children lives on in a positive and impactful way.

A Playground Built By Community

Headteacher Jinnie Payne emphasized the communal aspect, stating, “This is for all for the community – the Southport community – but also nationally.” This project has not only become a playground but a symbol of unity and strength for the community, where children can reclaim joy and play after such a significant loss. Deputy head Tom Dowd noted that the children feel ownership of the new playground because they played a vital role in raising the funds, thus ensuring that they see it as their very own space.

Celebrating Inclusivity and Positive Change

The Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference Awards, which took place at the Telford International Centre, celebrated the vital role of sport in promoting children's health and well-being. This illustrious event was attended by prominent figures from the sporting world, including former England women’s rugby captain Sarah Hunter. During the ceremony, many participants shared inspirational stories that exemplify how sports can be a catalyst for profound change in young people’s lives.

As Sarah Massey, director of sport at the British Olympic Association, noted, “The power that sport has to change lives” is not to be underestimated. The evening was a reminder of the importance of community initiatives in fostering positivity, inclusivity, and resilience in the face of adversity.

The commendable efforts of Churchtown Primary School illustrate how even in the darkest times, communities can come together to uplift and inspire. Their initiative not only transforms their local playground but also sets a powerful example for schools and communities everywhere, showcasing the potential of collective action to create meaningful change.
