Her Majesty's Inspiring Celebration of Reading and Community Engagement
In a remarkable event aimed at celebrating the power of literature and community connection, Her Majesty The Queen joined 150 volunteers from across the UK at the British Library to honor the significant role that reading plays in fostering community ties during the National Year of Reading.
A Collective Effort to Inspire
The Big Lunch: Sharing Stories event united the National Year of Reading with The Big Lunch initiative, emphasizing gratitude for volunteers who tirelessly contribute to enhancing reading experiences in their communities. This gathering sought to inspire that "Go All In" attitude, encouraging individuals to engage deeply with reading and volunteer efforts that positively impact their local areas.
Celebrating Young Talent and Literature
The event not only recognized established efforts but also highlighted the talents of young poets. UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage performed his playful poem "The Loan" and introduced the newly appointed Young Poet Laureates for London, Maya and Latifah, showcasing their exceptional creativity. Their appointment through the Young Poet Laureate programme aims to inspire a new generation of poets across the UK.
Community Building through Literature
Her Majesty’s enthusiastic engagement during the ‘Big Lunch’ included meeting with volunteers who shared stories about their endeavors to promote reading among all age groups. Paddington™, the beloved character, was announced as the latest National Year of Reading Ambassador, symbolizing themes of friendship and community spirit fostered through stories and food.
A Legacy of Reading and Volunteering
As the event concluded, a celebratory marmalade sandwich-inspired cake was unveiled, symbolizing the joyous spirit of community gathering. The occasion also acknowledged the contributions of 40 volunteer pupil librarians, each receiving Paddington books to share with family and friends, reinforcing the message that reading is a shared experience rich with opportunities for connection.
The National Year of Reading initiative, supported by Her Majesty and various community volunteers, aims to inspire future generations to explore their passions through reading, thereby building a legacy that extends beyond 2026. It emphasizes that reading is more than a pastime; it's a powerful means of discovering oneself and engaging with the world around us.
