How Therapy Dogs are Transforming Hospital Life for Staff and Patients

In a heartwarming initiative, Ascension Sacred Heart Bay in Panama City, Florida, has introduced a therapy dog program that is significantly uplifting the spirits of hospital staff and patients alike. Launched in January 2023, this program began as a response to the emotional toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to bring joy and comfort to those working in a challenging environment.

The Role of Therapy Dogs in Healing

Michelle Moore, the founder of the therapy dog program, emphasizes that hospitals can often feel overwhelming. The presence of trained therapy dogs offers staff a much-needed respite. “It just really makes a difference for them to have that break to see a therapy dog and to be able to pet and have some joy to step away from patient care for just a few minutes,” she notes. The initiative has grown from a single canine to a dedicated troupe of ten, with each dog earning a personal following among both staff and patients.

Impact on Patient Recovery

The benefits of this program extend beyond just providing comfort to the staff. Earnie Via, a K-9 certified master trainer involved in the program, shared a poignant story of a patient who had almost completely withdrawn from interaction. Upon seeing the therapy dogs, the patient began to laugh, and her vital signs improved significantly. “It just made a big difference,” Via reflects, showcasing the profound impact these dogs can have on mental and emotional health.

Ongoing Commitment to Comfort

Moving forward, the therapy dog program is not only focused on hospital settings but also aims to spread joy in schools, nursing homes, and local events. The mission is clear: these dogs provide unconditional love and kindness, fundamental elements needed in today's world. “With the world condition today, we need some love out here, and these dogs bring that love,” says Via.

As the program continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the incredible bond between humans and animals, proving once again that sometimes the best medicine can come on four paws.
