Inspiring Achievements: Celebrating Apprentices at Bradford College

On a night dedicated to recognizing exceptional talent, Bradford College hosted its annual Star Awards, coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week 2026. The event, held at Cedar Court Hotel, celebrated the remarkable achievements of apprentices who have demonstrated resilience, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to their personal and professional growth.

A Night of Recognition

The Star Awards were abuzz with inspiring stories that showcased the dedication of apprentices from various departments. Attendees, including students, staff, families, and local employers, came together to honor individuals who have excelled in their training programs. Among the many awards presented, Tegan Durkin, an apprentice at The Poplars Dental Practice, received the coveted ‘CBRE Apprentice of the Year’ award. Tegan's journey was particularly noteworthy as she persevered through a serious health diagnosis, embodying the spirit of determination in her educational pursuits.

Achievements of Noteworthy Apprentices

At the heart of the celebrations was Tegan's inspiring message about the value of apprenticeships. “I’m so surprised... I can’t believe I won! I’d 100% recommend an apprenticeship. You get real hands‑on experience while you study, and the support from the tutors and employers is just great!” she stated, reinforcing the importance of practical learning combined with academic support.

In addition to Tegan, Nida Hayat from St Philip’s CofE Primary School was awarded ‘Adult Apprentice of the Year’ for her remarkable quality of work while caring for two children with additional needs. Other winners included individuals who showcased exceptional skills—from engineering to dental care—each representing the diverse fields apprenticeships can lead to.

Words of Inspiration and Future Growth

Alina Khan, Vice Principal for EDI & Student Experience at Bradford College, addressed the audience, emphasizing the transformative power of apprenticeships. “You represent the very best of what apprenticeships offer: talent developed through opportunity, skill built through hard work, and growth achieved through lived experience,” she said. Khan's words resonated deeply, as the event underscored how vocational training nurtures the future workforce.

The annual Star Awards serves not only to recognize the achievements of individual apprentices but also to highlight the vital role of apprenticeship programs in developing skilled professionals. As Chris Leahy, Business Unit Leader at CBRE, concluded the evening with an empowering message, he reminded the apprentices of their potential to shape the workplaces of tomorrow. Embracing their experiences can be a foundation for both personal and professional success.
