Inspiring Community Choir Marks a Decade of Fundraising Triumphs
As The Big Choir celebrates its impressive ten-year milestone, it not only reflects on its journey but also sets bold new aspirations. With an impressive £500,000 raised for a groundbreaking cancer research facility, the choir, under the leadership of founder Sharon Czapnik Down, is now aiming for the remarkable goal of £1 million.
Transforming Grief into Purpose
Sharon's journey began in 2016, fueled by personal experiences with cancer that artistically transformed her grief into motivation. Losing close family and friends to various forms of cancer, followed by her own battle with aggressive breast cancer, led Sharon to initiate The Big Choir, where every penny raised is dedicated to cancer research.
“I genuinely believe I owe my survival to the incredible advances in cancer research,” she asserts, highlighting the significance of personalized treatment plans derived from persistent research. What began as a small initiative has burgeoned into a vibrant community effort, where members not only learn to sing but also gain a sense of belonging and purpose.

The choir has rapidly expanded since its origin in Barnet, with a notable spin-off in St Albans launched just last year. The money raised by the choir is directed towards The Francis Crick Institute, known for its innovative approach to cancer research.
