Inspiring Community Spirit Shines as Cyclists Unite for a Cause in Cape Town

In a remarkable display of community spirit and determination, the Motor Neuron Disease Association of South Africa (MNDA SA) is gearing up for the iconic 109km Cape Town Cycle Tour in 2026. This event aims to raise awareness and vital funds for individuals living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), an often misunderstood condition that affects countless families.

Raising Awareness Through Pedal Power

According to MNDA SA Vice Chair, Romany Sutherland, participating in the cycle tour is about more than just fundraising; it’s about visibility. Romany expressed the crucial need to educate the public about MND, stating, "There are not many people who know about this disease. So we need to educate people and let them know that help is available." Through actions like this, MNDA SA emphasizes that families affected by MND are not alone in their struggles.

A Team United in Purpose

The organization has assembled a team of 20 riders that includes both seasoned cyclists and newcomers. This diverse group has already formed a tight-knit community, rallying around each other during the training process. Romany remarked on the camaraderie among the participants, saying, "It’s all sorts of people. From business people, physiotherapists, and community members. There’s a lovely camaraderie." This positive atmosphere fosters not only community but also mutual encouragement as they prepare for the challenge ahead.

Turning Challenges into Care

The campaign’s motivational message, "Turning courage into kilometres, and kilometres into care," embodies the essence of their mission. Each kilometre cycled contributes to much-needed resources such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, breathing machines, and more, which directly support families grappling with the hardships of MND.

As participants gear up for the 2026 tour, the optimistic mood within the team serves as a testament to their collective resolve. They are not just cycling for personal achievement; they are also creating awareness, foster community connection, and generating crucial funding to assist those in need. The MNDA SA encourages everyone to consider donating to help them reach their goals, ensuring that every rand raised goes directly to supporting families affected by this challenging illness.
