Inspiring Grant Boosts Literacy Efforts in Alexandria Schools!

In a heartening display of community support, the Alexandria Women for Good (AWFG) has made a significant impact by awarding a grant of $13,973 to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC). This grant, celebrated during a “big check” presentation on April 30, is set to enhance tutoring and literacy initiatives aimed at empowering students in Alexandria.

A Generous Initiative

The grant was nominated by Eleanor Trice, a dedicated volunteer with ATC’s Book Buddies reading program. Her firsthand experience with the program has allowed her to witness the transformative power of literacy support. Trice expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods used in ATC’s Book Buddies program.” This grant will enable ATC to expand its reach and share even more books with students this summer.

Impacting Students’ Lives

According to ATC, their volunteer tutors currently work with approximately 300 students across all 14 public elementary schools in Alexandria. This initiative is crucial in helping struggling readers not only enhance their literacy skills but also build their confidence. Mary Ann Solomon, an ATC board member, highlighted the organization's progress, noting, “We’re kind of like the little engine that could,” and expressed gratitude towards AWFG for their support in expanding the program's outreach.

Building Community Connections

The Alexandria Women for Good is more than just a grant-giving organization; it serves as a vibrant community network that fosters connections among women through philanthropy and service. The organization hosts various events, including monthly happy hours and luncheons, aimed at strengthening local ties while benefiting community nonprofits. They are currently working towards a fundraising goal of $15,000 to support their next grant cycle and encourage more women to join their philanthropy circles.

Get Involved

The next Gather & Grant event is scheduled for May 7, where women interested in community service can learn more about the organization. This open event provides an opportunity to meet fellow community members and discover local nonprofits competing for the next grant award. AWFG's dedication to cultivating community improvement makes it a vital initiative in Alexandria.
