Inspiring Stories from the TCS London Marathon: How Addenbrooke's Runners are Making a Difference
The TCS London Marathon is not only a sports event but also a platform for inspiring stories of courage, resilience, and community spirit. This year, a record number of 18 runners are participating to support Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT), raising an incredible £54,000 to fund vital care and research at Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Rosie Hospital.
A Family United by Hope
Among the runners is Jack Sibbons, whose family has a deeply personal connection to Addenbrooke's. His twin sister, Amy, was diagnosed with leukaemia while pregnant. After a difficult battle, both she and her son, Chester, emerged healthy, and Jack is determined to cross the finish line with Chester's inspiring support. "We owe everything to them forever," he expresses, highlighting the importance of the trust in their lives.
Connecting Through the Journey
As part of their marathon training, Jack and Amy recently visited the hospital where they were reunited with the midwifery team who assisted during Chester's delivery. This touching reunion emphasized the enduring connections formed through shared experiences and the invaluable care provided by the hospital staff.
Many Stories, One Cause
Jack is not alone in his mission; Greg Sharland, another runner, shares his gratitude as his son, Oscar, continues to thrive after treatment for brain cancer at Addenbrooke's. Other inspiring participants include individuals who are running in memory of loved ones or to celebrate life-saving treatments received at the hospital. Each story represents the resilience of the human spirit and the difference ACT makes in countless lives.
The Community Comes Together
Emily Willdigg, Community Relationships Manager at ACT, expressed pride in the runners, stating, "Their efforts go far beyond the finish line." The funds raised are crucial for supporting groundbreaking research and providing exceptional care for patients and families, reinforcing the community's commitment to health and wellness.
With the marathon set to unfold, these stories remind us that the act of running transcends the physical challenge, becoming a meaningful journey for runners and supporters alike. Through their collective efforts, the Addenbrooke’s community stands as a testament to the power of hope and compassion.
