Inspiring Story: 91-Year-Old Man Crafts Joy Through Wooden Toys

In a heartwarming tale from Glastonbury, 91-year-old John Harris has found a remarkable way to uplift his community by handcrafting over 300 wooden toys. Living in a care home, Harris dedicates his time to the Street and Walton Men's Shed, where he creates these charming wooden monkeys that not only serve as toys but also as symbols of generosity and kindness.

A Passion for Crafting

Harris visits the Men's Shed twice a week, utilizing the workshop to channel his grief into a productive hobby. Following the loss of his wife, he discovered the therapeutic benefits of woodworking, which has since become a meaningful outlet for creativity and companionship. "It's a fantastic place, we're all in together and we have men's banter as usual," he expressed, highlighting the camaraderie he enjoys at the shed.

Bringing Joy to Others

The toys crafted by Harris are not solely for sale; he donates many to local charities and families in need, demonstrating his desire to spread joy. Seeing children who lack the means to afford toys inspired him to give back, which he describes as a rewarding experience. Some monkeys go to the church and his care home, where they bring smiles to residents and staff alike.

A Legacy of Care

With a colorful career in the Police Force, Air Force, and accountancy prior to retirement, Harris remains a dedicated family man. His three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren visit him regularly, ensuring he remains an active and cherished member of both his family and the community at the care home. Nisha Binumon, the care home manager, attests to his uplifting presence, saying, "It's wonderful having John with us. He's kind, caring, and always checking if any of his monkeys have sold."

John Harris's story is a testament to the power of community, craftsmanship, and the human spirit. Through his small acts of kindness, he reminds us all of the impact that one person can have in creating a more compassionate society.
