Inspiring Young Minds Shine at the 2026 SEND Awards
In a heartening celebration of resilience and community, young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have taken center stage at the 2026 SEND Awards. Hosted on April 23 at Blundell Park, the awards brought together members of the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG) to review 407 nominations that showcase the incredible achievements and determination of young individuals facing unique challenges.
A Showcase of Resilience and Commitment
The nominated stories highlight not only the triumphs of these young people but also the enthusiastic support from families and organizations dedicated to creating an inclusive environment. One poignant nomination captures the essence of their journey: "They prove every day that determination can overcome even the greatest challenges." Such powerful testimonials illustrate the unwavering spirit of resilience that characterizes the SEND community.
A Unified Community
The involvement of families and activity providers in supporting young people is equally commendable. A remark from a parent noted, "Their commitment doesn’t stop at the school gate — they support families through the hardest moments too." This sentiment reflects a collective effort within the community to uplift and empower individuals with additional needs.
Authenticity in the Awards Process
YPAG members played a pivotal role in selecting the award winners. Their engagement ensures that the results genuinely reflect the values and priorities of those with lived experiences. Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children's Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, stated, "Having young people involved in choosing the winners ensures the SEND Awards truly reflect what matters to those with lived experience." This insight not only adds authenticity to the awards but also promotes a sense of ownership and pride among participants.
Looking Forward to the Celebration
The winners of the SEND Awards will soon be notified and invited to a celebration at Grimsby Town Hall on June 18, showcasing the incredible strength and determination of these remarkable young individuals. This prestigious event promises to further inspire communities across the region to continue fostering support, inclusion, and understanding for those with special educational needs and disabilities.
