Inspiring Youth and Community Engagement: De Montfort University Launches "Voices of the City"
De Montfort University (DMU) is making waves in Leicester by gearing up for a series of uplifting guest lectures that spotlight community heroes. Dubbed "Voices of the City," this initiative is poised to inspire students while promoting community engagement through impactful storytelling.
Community Heroes Take the Stage
The project brings together community advocates, charity leaders, and individuals who have made a significant difference across Leicester. They will share their experiences with students enrolled in DMU's Foundation Degree in Tourism and Event Management, highlighting the importance of local heroes and the narratives that shape the city.
A Valuable Learning Experience
Radostina Gininska, a student team leader from Leicester College, expressed her excitement about the project. She stated, “I’m excited to be part of the ‘Voices of the City’ project, which highlights the people and stories shaping Leicester.” The series not only aims to enrich the students' learning but also fosters a deeper connection with the community.
Promoting Sustainable Development Goals
This three-part lecture series is supported by the university's United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals Hub. It offers a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience while addressing meaningful global themes at a local level. According to Megan Whitwood from Leicester College, collaborating with DMU has enhanced the students' ability to engage with pertinent topics that resonate within their community.
Upcoming Events
The event series continues on May 7 and 14, with topics exploring the influence of sport on identity and community, as well as strategies for creating safer environments against violence. These sessions are free and open to the public, encouraging community participation and engagement.
As the series unfolds, DMU stands at the forefront of fostering youth empowerment and inspiring community action, proving once again that education can serve as a powerful catalyst for social change.
