The Twin Cities’ light rail system has faced significant challenges in recent years, primarily attributed to passenger safety concerns and unruly behavior. Enhancing Safety and Presence

With a reported 8% increase in rider safety perceptions over the past two years, the advocacy for safety measures is beginning to bear fruit. Metro Transit has implemented a proactive approach by deploying a dedicated force of blue-jacketed TRIP (Transit Rider Investment Program) agents, who monitor the system and ensure compliance with fare rules. The number of these agents has increased to approximately 140, with plans to expand to 215 by the end of the year, signaling a commitment to safety and vigilance.

Metro Transit’s efforts have not only focused on enforcement. The agency has developed a homeless action team and is set to contract mental health crisis services in an endeavor to address the complexities of maintaining public safety in urban transit. By relieving Metro Transit Police from fare checking responsibilities, officers can concentrate on more serious incidents, resulting in a reported doubling of proactive responses to incidents last year. Smoking, a frequent complaint among passengers, has seen an increase in citations—an impressive statistic that reflects the enhanced enforcement efforts, which aim to improve the overall riding experience.

These improvements come at a time when many transit agencies nationwide are reducing services due to financial constraints. In contrast, Minnesota’s legislature has taken a proactive stance, approving a 0.75% metrowide sales tax dedicated to transit. This funding is critical to maintaining and boosting services while addressing safety concerns, which if sustained, could lead to a significant uptick in ridership as former passengers feel encouraged to return.
