Faced with the challenge of a nearly full landfill in the early 2000s, Shibushi and Osaki took proactive measures to significantly enhance their recycling efforts, achieving an impressive recycling rate of 80%—far exceeding the national average.

The initiative, led by the company Unicharm, is particularly focused on recycling dirty diapers, which contribute significantly to landfill waste. Each year, billions of diapers are discarded in Japan, primarily due to their complex materials which make them difficult to recycle. However, this initiative has pioneered a method that separates and processes the core materials of diapers for reuse, thereby extending the lifespan of the region's landfill.
