Join the Fight Against Litter: The Great British Spring Clean Returns!

As Britain grapples with the staggering issue of litter, with over 30 million tonnes discarded annually, there is a silver lining on the horizon—the return of the Great British Spring Clean. Set to take place from 13-29 March, this initiative organized by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy brings together individuals and communities to transform local spaces into pristine areas once again.

Be a Part of the Solution

The Great British Spring Clean offers everyone an opportunity to actively participate in litter removal efforts. Since its inception as a one-off event in 2016, the initiative has mobilized a vast army of volunteers, known affectionately as Litter Heroes, who have collectively pledged to pick up an impressive 4.5 million bags of rubbish from streets, parks, and waterways. Last year alone, nearly 400,000 volunteers participated, and an astonishing 95% of them reported that their contributions made a significant difference in their communities.

Meet the Inspirators

This year’s campaign is supported by dedicated individuals like Emdad Rahman, a civil servant and one of Keep Britain Tidy’s 200 Litter Hero Ambassadors. Emdad leads the Little Litter League, a program that encourages young people and families to cherish their environment. His unwavering belief in the power of one individual to create change is as refreshing as it is necessary. Emdad states, “I strongly believe that one person can make a difference,” emphasizing the importance of education in fostering a culture of care for our surroundings.

Corporate Collaboration for a Cleaner Future

Support for the Great British Spring Clean extends beyond individual volunteers. Notable partnerships with companies like KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, and Nestlé have enhanced the campaign's reach and impact. For instance, Mars Wrigley is contributing to the reduction of gum litter through its Chewing Gum Task Force, which has seen up to 86% reductions in littering thanks to awareness campaigns and street cleaning efforts.

A Call to Action

This is a crucial moment for citizens across Britain to rally together and do something meaningful for their communities. Whether it's pledging to pick up a single bag of litter or organizing a local cleanup effort, your participation can help restore the beauty of our shared spaces. Registration is simple—individuals and groups can sign up online, and every contribution counts. Join the movement, show you care, and help ensure that our environment remains a place we can all be proud of.

As Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, aptly notes, “Thanks to passionate and dedicated volunteers like Emdad, over four million bags of harmful litter have been removed from streets, parks, and beaches.” This sentiment resonates strongly in a time when community action has never been more important. Let’s come together this March to protect our environment and demonstrate that we truly love where we live.
