Join the Movement: Over Two Million People Unite for the Great Big Green Week

This June, the United Kingdom will witness an inspiring display of solidarity and action for climate and nature as over two million people are set to participate in the Great Big Green Week. Running from June 6 to June 14, this initiative encourages communities to come together for positive change, celebrating the strides already made while actively working towards a sustainable future.

Corporate Support for a Green Future

Major companies such as Co-op, BT, and Openreach have committed to supporting this year's event, aiming to ensure that the significance of climate action resonates not just in boardrooms but in local neighborhoods. Co-op, in particular, will mobilize its seven million members and colleagues to take part in community events, directly engaging people where they live and work to drive meaningful action.

Last Year's Success and Growing Impact

The success of the previous year’s Great Big Green Week is noteworthy, with more than 1.2 million individuals engaging in over 5,800 events across the country. A remarkable one-third of these participants were new to climate action, demonstrating a growing awareness and willingness to contribute to environmental efforts. The expectations for 2026 are even higher, with hopes that participation will double, showcasing the increasing momentum behind this essential cause.

The Importance of Community Involvement

Paul Gerrard, Co-op’s public affairs director, emphasized the role of community in tackling climate issues, stating, "We know people care deeply about protecting the places they love and the future they’re building together." His remarks highlight how grassroots engagement can foster a broader understanding of environmental responsibility and community support.

Everyone is Welcome to Participate

The Great Big Green Week is notably non-political and inclusive, aiming to demonstrate that everyone has a role in protecting the planet. Businesses of all sizes are encouraged to join in, whether through in-store events, staff volunteer days, or collaborations with local organizations. Helen Meech of The Climate Coalition underlined the collective effort needed to make real progress, stating that "Great Big Green Week is a practical, positive way for businesses to show what they’re already doing."

The message is clear: the upcoming Great Big Green Week represents a pivotal opportunity for communities and businesses alike to unite for a common purpose—taking tangible steps towards a healthier planet for future generations.
