Liverpool FC: Leading the Charge for Gender Inclusion in Football
Liverpool Football Club and the LFC Foundation have recently been honored at the 2026 Women’s Football Awards for their unwavering commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment in the world of women's football. The prestigious Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Award is bestowed upon organizations making significant strides toward gender inclusion in sports.
A Commitment to Gender Inclusion
The recognition comes as no surprise, considering gender inclusion is a core part of Liverpool FC's sustainability strategy, The Red Way. This long-term plan emphasizes the club’s responsibility to build a better future for its people, communities, and the planet. In collaboration with Her Game Too, Liverpool FC has taken proactive steps to combat sexism and misogyny within the sport, ensuring that all women feel secure and welcomed at Anfield.
Innovative Campaigns and Training
As part of their campaign, over 100 staff members underwent specialized training to better respond to incidents associated with gender discrimination, a crucial move that highlights the club's dedication to creating a safe atmosphere. Liverpool FC’s global outreach is also commendable, with impressive collaborations throughout 2025 and 2026 that have elevated female voices in football, reaching a staggering audience of 14 million.
Creating Opportunities for Women
Internally, the club is equally committed to fostering women's participation and leadership in football. By joining the Women in Football membership program, Liverpool FC is actively supporting its female workforce through a variety of workshops and mentoring initiatives. This approach cultivates a positive and inclusive workplace, addressing barriers and expanding opportunities for women within the sport.
Community Engagement Initiatives
The work of the LFC Foundation is also noteworthy; it continues creating accessible pathways for women and girls in local communities. Targeted programs like ‘We Empower’ aim to challenge gender stereotypes, with a remarkable 86% of participants reporting increased confidence in challenging such norms. Furthermore, initiatives like Premier League Kicks have engaged 271 girls, providing them with opportunities to build skills and confidence in an inclusive setting.
Rishi Jain, Director of Impact at Liverpool FC, said it best: “This recognition reflects the ongoing work across the club and LFC Foundation to drive meaningful progress on gender inclusion. We believe football should be a game where women and girls feel safe, valued, and able to thrive.” With such a robust framework in place, Liverpool FC is not just a club; it is a beacon of hope for gender inclusion in sports, proving that there is always more to be done but also celebrating the progress achieved.
