Local Hero Saves Beloved Pub: A Testament to Community Spirit

In a touching act of dedication, Peter Manfield, a 73-year-old music teacher in Devon, England, has remortgaged his home to save his cherished local pub, The Dog and Donkey. This establishment, which has stood as a pillar of the community for a century, faced the threat of being sold to the highest bidder, prompting Manfield to take decisive action to preserve the village's heart.

A Historic Gathering Place

The Dog and Donkey, originally erected in 1926 as the Brittania Inn, has been a gathering place for residents for generations. It boasts charming features such as an original fireplace and tiled floor, and holds a significant place in the local history. "To lose (the village’s) heart would’ve been catastrophic," Manfield remarked, highlighting the pub's vital role in the community.

Collaborative Efforts for Preservation

After acquiring the pub for about £270,000, Manfield faced the challenge of finding someone to manage it. Fortunately, he stumbled upon Mark Loftin, a newcomer to pub management but a passionate believer in maintaining the establishment's traditional values. Together, they are committed to keeping the pub a welcoming space, hosting everything from community meetings to social gatherings.

A Thriving Community Hub

The revitalization of The Dog and Donkey has been met with overwhelming support, as locals express their gratitude for Manfield's decision to save the pub. With a renewed sense of purpose, the pub is becoming a lively hub once again, attracting visitors and encouraging social interaction. "We are extremely lucky. Mark has been an amazing landlord,” says Manfield, reflecting the positive atmosphere surrounding the establishment.

As The Dog and Donkey embarks on this new chapter, it stands as a refreshing example of how community spirit, resilience, and collaboration can make a significant difference in the survival of local treasures. It serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most uplifting stories stem from the simple act of caring for one's community.
