Local Student Shines at International Science Fair, Inspires Future Generations

In a remarkable display of talent and innovation, Elisabeth Wallace, a student from the Magnet Innovation Center STEAM High School, recently represented Florida’s East Panhandle region at the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair. Competing against some of the brightest young scientists from around the globe, Wallace's journey has become a beacon of inspiration for aspiring scientists everywhere.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Forefront

Wallace's project focused on developing a more sustainable super-absorbing polymer material, which is commonly used in products such as diapers. By creating a new process for producing this polymer, she aimed to enhance its sustainability—an effort that underscores the importance of environmentally friendly solutions in today’s world. Reflecting on her experience, Wallace stated, “It was really shocking. I was very excited about it, but I wasn’t expecting that at all.”

Hard Work Pays Off

Months of diligent research and preparation contributed to the success of her project. Dr. Margaret Aresco, an instructor at the Magnet Innovation Center, praised Wallace’s unwavering dedication, saying, “She worked so hard on this project from the beginning all the way through taking data up until the very last minute.” This commitment is a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets perseverance.

A Message of Inspiration

One of the highlights of the experience for Wallace was the opportunity to connect with fellow students from around the world who share her passion for science. “If I hadn’t kept trying, I wouldn’t have made it to this level,” she remarked. Her hope is that her journey will inspire younger students to pursue their own dreams and embrace the challenges along the way. “It showed me how big dreams can take you around the world,” she noted, reinforcing the idea that hard work and determination can lead to extraordinary opportunities.
