Local Student Wins Awards for Groundbreaking Discovery in Environmental Science

In a remarkable achievement that showcases the innovative spirit of young scientists, Vera Wang, a senior at Kaiser High School in East Honolulu, has made a significant breakthrough in using fungi to combat plastic and sunscreen pollution in our oceans. Her project not only earned her multiple awards at the Hawaiʻi State Science & Engineering Fair but also secured her a spot at the prestigious International Science & Engineering Fair next May in Arizona.

Innovative Research in Environmental Cleanup

Wang’s journey began during her sophomore year when she conceived the idea of creating an ocean filter designed to remove harmful substances from the water. Drawing inspiration from traditional Polynesian weaving and modern environmental science, she utilized coconut husk byproduct waste to construct an effective, sustainable solution. This innovative filter targets both microplastics and sunscreen, addressing urgent environmental concerns.

Breaking New Ground with Fungal Research

As her research progressed, Wang identified an even more promising avenue of exploration—investigating the fungal communities found on coconut husks. Through her experiments in Anthony Amend’s lab at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, she discovered that these fungi have the potential to biodegrade harmful substances, presenting a dual opportunity: reducing ocean pollutants and promoting eco-friendly decomposition processes. Her findings indicate that the natural tannins in coconut fibers may play a pivotal role in supporting the growth of these beneficial fungi, revealing possibilities for future research and applications.
