Local Students Shine with Inspiring Graphic Novel on Freedom
In a remarkable initiative celebrating creativity and historical reflection, pupils from three local schools have come together to produce a graphic novel, commemorating 80 years since the conclusion of World War II. This collaborative project not only showcases their artistic talents but also encourages thoughtful dialogue about the concept of freedom in today's society.
A Collaborative Effort
Students from Vale of Leven Academy, Our Lady & St Patrick’s High School, and Dumbarton Academy teamed up with renowned comic author and community storyteller Paul Bristow to bring their vision to life. The graphic novel, titled "Our Freedom: Then and Now – Stories from Alexandria, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven," is a part of a nationwide effort aimed at exploring the diverse meanings of freedom. The project is supported by the Council’s Libraries and Arts & Heritage teams, exemplifying a strong community partnership.
Launch and Community Impact
The novel was unveiled at a special event held at Alexandria Library, attended by local councillors and participating students who celebrated the occasion together. Councillor William Rooney praised the creativity and depth of thought demonstrated by the students, expressing confidence that the graphic novel offers significant insight into the perspectives of young individuals regarding freedom today. Meanwhile, Vice-Convenor Councillor Lawrence O’Neill commended the commitment exhibited by everyone involved, emphasizing that this project is a source of pride for the community.
A Resource for Future Generations
Now available at all West Dunbartonshire libraries, this graphic novel serves as a meaningful resource for future generations, encouraging them to reflect on the values of freedom and community. The project also received substantial backing, with the Council’s teams awarded £15,000 to participate in the Our Freedom: Then and Now campaign, which hosts various community events marking this significant historical anniversary.
This initiative exemplifies the power of youth collaboration in addressing meaningful topics and creating art that resonates within the community, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to inform and inspire the future.
