Local Students Take Giant Steps for a Global Cause: The Inspiring Big Lent Walk
This week, broadcaster and author Harry Clark returned to his hometown of Slough to motivate students at St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School, as they prepare to participate in the transformative Big Lent Walk for the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD). This remarkable event not only serves as a challenge for the young people involved but also as a pivotal effort to address the ongoing global water crisis.
A Walk for Change
The Big Lent Walk, now in its fifth year, encourages participants to walk 200 kilometers over the course of 40 days, all in support of providing safe water to communities worldwide. Initially launched during the lockdown as a 'walk for water' to remember individuals who trek miles daily for clean drinking water, this year's event has garnered over 1,000 supporters, including numerous schools across the country.
An Inspiring Visit
During his visit, Harry shared heartfelt stories from his own life, highlighting how his experiences in the British Army and his journey through television enhanced his perspective on overcoming challenges. He emphasized the role of faith, saying, “I never realized how much walking and running could help strengthen your faith.” His words served as an essential reminder of the impact of personal growth and community service.
Concrete Steps Towards a Sustainable Future
Headteacher Paul Kassapian expressed pride in the students’ initiative, noting their ongoing education about climate change and its effects on communities globally. “It’s wonderful that they are now taking action and doing their bit to help tackle this global issue,” he remarked. This collective movement not only empowers students but also cultivates awareness of critical environmental challenges facing the world today.
The Big Lent Walk represents a significant step towards making a difference. To get involved and contribute to this noble cause, interested individuals can register at CAFOD’s website and join in the fight for global water access.
