A remarkable story has emerged from Sherwood, Nottingham, where a 94-year-old veteran and former educator, Dennis Green, has been honored with the prestigious Blind Veterans UK Founders Award. This recognition comes after nearly two decades of dedicated service to primary school children, fostering a love for reading.

A Lasting Legacy of Love for Reading

Known affectionately as “Mr. George” by his students, Dennis received the award during an emotional farewell assembly at Haydn Primary School, marking his final visit as a volunteer reader. Over 300 children gathered to celebrate his exemplary commitment, filling the school's sports hall with cheers and songs in recognition of the profound impact he has made on generations of young learners.

A Heartfelt Tribute

During the assembly, students presented Dennis with two specially created books filled with letters and memories as a heartfelt thank you for his unwavering dedication. Dennis expressed his surprise at the turnout, stating, “I was quite staggered by the number of people there. I didn’t expect anything like it and I was very pleased to receive the award.” His gratitude highlighted how meaningful this recognition was for him, underscoring the genuine affection between him and his students.

Despite facing challenges due to age-related macular degeneration, Dennis continued to inspire children through reading. He employed a magnifying glass to assist him, often enlisting the help of students to spell out words he struggled to see. Before dedicating his time to Haydn Primary School, Dennis had a fulfilling career as a secondary school teacher, shaping young minds in English and mathematics for 21 years. His journey in education began at age 18 when he joined the Royal Air Force, ultimately leading him to a life devoted to teaching.

Since 2017, Dennis has received invaluable support from Blind Veterans UK, an organization that has equipped him with practical tools to maintain his independence, including a reader that scans and reads text aloud. “Blind Veterans UK provided me with a reader and a magnifier which have made a tremendous difference,” he shared, illustrating the pivotal role the charity plays in his life.
