In an exciting initiative that celebrates both music and empowerment, Forever Fresh, a collective of female DJs over the age of 60, is making waves in the music scene. This unprecedented group was formed after a Cologne festival sought to engage older demographics, recognizing a gap in representation for women of this age group within the DJ community.
A Pioneering Idea Takes Shape
The journey began during a summer booking meeting for the C/O Festival, led by Pia Leohart. The realization that there was a lack of representation for women over 60 sparked an innovative idea: could senior women be interested in DJing? With this question in mind, festival organizers sent out a call for interest, and the response was overwhelming.
Learning the Art of DJing
Women from various backgrounds, some of whom had never even used computers before, jumped at the chance to learn the intricacies of DJing. Under the guidance of instructors, including the inspiring DJ Sedaction, these women are mastering the craft—learning about mixes, transitions, and handling audio equipment. The enthusiasm of these seniors to take on such a challenging task showcases a remarkable spirit of resilience and adventure.
A Celebration of Life and Joy
Among the members is 90-year-old DJ Miss Crazy Irma, who, despite using a walker in her daily life, lights up the stage with her energetic performances. "I don’t do things halfway," she asserts, embodying the joy and enthusiasm that the collective represents. The founding of Forever Fresh in April 2025 has already led to seven successful performances, including a standout gig at the Cologne festival.
Bringing Generations Together
The collective not only serves as a platform for the participants to experience the thrill of performing but also provides various health benefits such as improved mental health and physical fitness through dancing. Surprisingly, they have attracted a younger audience as well, with 64-year-old Uschi Ophir sharing her delight at the enthusiastic turnout from the younger generation. "It’s exciting because we thought only our families and friends would come," she noted.
An Eclectic Mix That Captivated All
The music played at these performances ranges from EDM beats by David Guetta to pop anthems from stars like Pink and Miley Cyrus, as well as classic hits like "Dancing Queen" by Abba. Partygoers have expressed their delight, with many finding the energy of the performers to be contagious. One attendee remarked, "To be honest, it was fantastic. I really didn’t expect it to be so captivating." It's a testament to the vibrant culture that can thrive in unexpected places.
