New Bell of Hope at Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute Celebrates All Patient Journeys
In a heartwarming initiative, Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute has unveiled a new bell that signifies more than just the end of treatment; it represents hope and inclusivity for all cancer patients. On April 17, 2026, oncology nurses Tara Collins, Heather Maucher, Deirdre Kilcommons, and Kristen Wissbaum led the charge to introduce this symbol of milestone celebration to the Wilmington community.
An Inclusive Symbol of Triumph
Traditionally, the ringing of a bell at Zimmer signified the completion of treatment. However, recognizing that not every cancer journey concludes in such a way, the Oncology Nursing Society's Cape Fear Chapter proposed a new bell located outside the institute's front door. This aims to honor the diverse paths patients take in their healing journey, acknowledging those who continue treatment without a definitive end.
Artistic Collaboration for a Meaningful Purpose
Local artist Dumay Gorham was commissioned to create a stunning representation of a cancer awareness ribbon, which elegantly holds the new bell. Not only is the design visually striking, but its silver hue symbolizes support for all types of cancer, ensuring inclusivity. Gorham expressed his honor in participating in this project, noting the collective experience many share with cancer.
A Celebration of Courage
At the dedication ceremony, Stephen Gore, a throat cancer survivor, symbolically rang the bell, marking his personal victory over cancer. Having been declared cancer-free in December 2025, Gore is now dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, exemplifying resilience and community spirit by previously raising $8,300 during the New York City Marathon for the V Foundation. His gratitude for the institute reflects the impact of their care on his life.
The staff at Zimmer is excited about the new bell, as it will allow patients to recognize their achievements, whether they are transitioning to different treatments, celebrating milestones, or acknowledging the endurance of their journey. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community among patients but also creates opportunities for families and friends to celebrate together.
The new bell at Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute embodies hope, resilience, and the belief that every step in a cancer journey deserves recognition, regardless of where it leads. This innovative approach signifies a new era of understanding and support for cancer patients within the Wilmington community.
