New Brewpub in Witney: A Dream Come True for Local Community
Customers have warmly embraced the new Scarlet River Brewing Company in Witney, a brewpub that finally opened its doors following delays in construction and a long-awaited wait for the 10-year lease to be signed. Founded by former Tap Social head brewer Jason Bolger and his partner, scientist and medical researcher Niki Sibson, this establishment signifies the return of commercial brewing to Witney for the first time since 2023.
Reviving Local Brewing Traditions
Located next to Marks & Spencer in the Marriotts Walk shopping centre, the Scarlet River pub features seating for up to 50 inside and 30 outside, filling a unit that has remained unoccupied since the centre opened in 2009. The brewpub is not just a place for craft beer; it aims to foster a community by providing a welcoming space for both seasoned ale aficionados and newcomers to the craft beer scene. Mr. Bolger noted that they have seen as many as 65 customers seated at one time, reflecting the thoughtful design of the space and the excitement surrounding its opening.
Craft Beer and Community Support
Scarlet River Brewing Company offers a variety of craft beers served directly from tanks, including IPAs, lagers, a stout, a wheat beer, and the Old Curmudgeon Bitter, a delightful cask-style brew. Additionally, they provide Purbeck Cider and their own Scarlet River-branded gin and spiced rum, as well as a selection of wines and soft drinks, ensuring there is something for everyone.
Beyond the offerings, Scarlet River is committed to supporting former military personnel by aiming to recruit ex-services individuals for senior roles, a commendable initiative that aligns with the values of community integration and support. This reflects a thoughtful approach to business, aiming to create opportunities for those who may face challenges in transitioning to civilian life.
Looking Ahead
The couple is not only focused on craft brewing; they plan to expand the menu to include food and move toward an all-day café-bar operation in the future. The excitement surrounding the brewpub encapsulates the passion Mr. Bolger and Ms. Sibson have for bringing a slice of brewing history back to Witney, a place known for its rich brewing heritage since the 1830s. As Mr. Bolger puts it, “We hope to continue this and welcome everyone very soon,” hinting at an engaging future for the establishment and the community it serves.
