New Government Measures Aim to Prevent Skin Cancer Among Youth
The UK government is taking significant steps toward health safety by proposing mandatory ID checks for sunbed users, a move designed to protect children and teenagers from the dangers of tanning salons. The Department of Health and Social Care has initiated a 12-week consultation period, gathering input from the public, businesses, local authorities, and health experts. If the proposals are approved, they could lead to more stringent regulations by 2027, with the aim of stopping young people from improperly accessing sunbeds. Currently, individuals under 18 are prohibited from using sunbeds, but many still find ways around this regulation. The proposed changes would ensure a trained staff member is always present to verify IDs, mitigating the risk of underage users gaining access.

Significant health warnings about the dangers of sunbeds will also be mandated to appear in a more visible format, and misleading claims about the benefits of sunbeds will be outright banned. Public Health and Prevention Minister Sharon Hodgson emphasized the need for proactive measures: “Stopping cancer before it starts is the best thing we can do for families and the NHS,” she stated. This preventative approach reflects a commitment to safeguarding the health of future generations.

Both Cancer Research UK and NHS England have expressed concern over the rising melanoma skin cancer numbers, with more than 20,000 diagnoses reported annually. Experts stress that many skin cancer cases are preventable, underlining the importance of sun safety measures.
