The City of Cape Town is set to enhance the accessibility of essential civic services through the establishment of a new, appointment-only Home Affairs office at the Civic Centre. This initiative aims to streamline processes for residents applying for smart IDs and passports, ultimately improving the service delivery experience in the region.

Enhancing Service Delivery

The proposed office represents a significant collaboration between the City of Cape Town and the Department of Home Affairs. Alderman Theresa Uys, the Cape Town MMC for corporate services, expressed optimism about the new office, emphasizing its potential to provide "streamlined, appointment-based access to key national government services." This move is expected to greatly ease the burden on the existing Barrack Street location, which has struggled with high demand.

A Convenient Location

Situated on the second floor of the Civic Centre, the new office is strategically placed to ensure that all residents can benefit from improved access to government services. With access to public transportation options like the MyCiTi bus service and the Station Deck minibus-taxi facility, the location has been praised for its accessibility, making it easier for people to reach these vital services.

Addressing the Challenge of ID Documentation

This initiative follows the Department of Home Affairs' persistent commitment to upgrading access to smart ID cards, which are designed to replace the older, increasingly problematic green ID books. The department reported a record issuance of over 4 million smart ID cards in 2025, indicating strong progress towards the ultimate goal of phasing out the green ID system.

Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs, emphasized that this new office is part of broader reforms aimed at modernizing service delivery in South Africa.
