Older Women Take the Stage: The Inspiring Rise of Forever Fresh DJs
In a remarkable initiative aimed at inclusivity and empowerment, a group of female DJs over the age of 60, collectively known as Forever Fresh, have taken the stage by storm at the C/O Festival in Cologne, Germany. This innovative program arose from a realization that there was a lack of representation for older women in the festival scene, prompting the organizers to reach out for new talent among the senior community.
A Call to Action
During a summer meeting, Pia Leohart from the festival's organizing team noted, “We realized there really wasn’t anything for women over 60.” This sparked an exciting opportunity where senior women, many of whom had little to no experience with computer technology, expressed a newfound desire to learn the art of DJing. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, they embarked on mastering everything from mixing to managing audio equipment.
The Joy of Motion at Any Age
What’s truly inspiring is the diversity within this group. The oldest member, DJ Miss Crazy Irma, is a vibrant 90-year-old who, despite using a walker in her daily life, lights up the stage with her energetic performances. “I don’t do things halfway, you know,” she remarked emphatically, embodying the passion and enthusiasm that this project has cultivated.
Bridging Generations
The Forever Fresh collective has performed seven gigs since their inception in April 2025, captivating audiences with their eclectic mix of music, which includes popular tracks from artists like David Guetta and Abba. Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. One audience member expressed surprise at the engaging performances, stating, “To be honest, it was fantastic. I really didn’t expect it to be so captivating.”
Health Benefits and Community Spirit
Beyond just entertainment, this initiative has offered numerous health benefits to the participants, from improved mental health to weight loss through the joy of dancing. The camaraderie and excitement shared between the performers and the audience create a vibrant community environment. “The younger people were amazing! Really, really great,” said Uschi Ophir, the youngest member at 64, highlighting the intergenerational connections formed during these events.
As we continue to witness the evolution of representation in various forms of entertainment, Forever Fresh serves as a powerful reminder that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passions and that music has the unique ability to unite people of all ages.
