Oregon's Iconic Abiqua Falls Set to Become Public Treasure
In a remarkable turn of events, the beloved Abiqua Falls in Oregon is on the brink of becoming publicly accessible after being held in private ownership for decades. This beloved natural wonder, known for its stunning beauty, is to be purchased by the state, ensuring its protection for future generations.
A Positive Step for Conservation
Abiqua Falls, a majestic 92-foot plunge-style waterfall surrounded by lush, moss-covered basalt rock, has long been a hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest. Owned by the Mount Angel Abbey since 1908, the foundation has prioritized public accessibility, making this purchase a testament to their commitment to preserving nature’s beauty. State Senator Fred Girod has championed the cause, negotiating a purchase agreement that is part of a larger $500 million funding bill aimed at supporting various statewide projects.
Funding for a Sustainable Future
The purchase agreement includes $2 million specifically allocated to acquire not only Abiqua Falls but also 42 acres surrounding it, along with an additional 160 acres upstream. Senator Girod emphasized the abbey’s willingness to facilitate this transition, saying, “They’ve been good stewards and bent over backward to make sure public access was guaranteed.” This cooperative spirit will allow Oregonians future generations to experience this breathtaking waterfall without the threat of commercial exploitation.
Preservation Over Development
While the falls will be transitioned to public ownership, there is a prudent focus on preserving its delicate ecosystem. Discussions are underway regarding the future management of the land, with possibilities leaning towards minimal development to prevent overcrowding and maintain the natural serenity of the site. This careful planning reflects a growing recognition of the importance of safeguarding our natural resources.
A Legacy for Generations
Dr. Amanda Staggenborg, director of communications for the Mount Angel Abbey & Seminary, expressed her optimism for the future, stating, “The beauty of Abiqua Falls will be enjoyed by generations of Oregonians and all those who love Oregon's natural wonders.” As the transfer of ownership approaches, the community looks forward to what could become a treasured state park, celebrating the unspoiled beauty of nature while promoting responsible stewardship for years to come.
