Remarkable Progress: UK Charitable Foundations Set New Standards in Transparency and Accountability

The latest Foundation Practice Rating (FPR) report reveals an unprecedented leap forward for UK charitable foundations, highlighting significant improvements in diversity, accountability, and transparency. This year marks the strongest results in the initiative’s five-year history, showcasing the sector's commitment to enhancing its practices.

A Historic Achievement

The annual assessment covered 100 UK grant-making foundations, and the findings indicate that more foundations than ever before have excelled in their performance. Notably, 12 foundations achieved the highest overall A grade, a record number for a single year. This demonstrates that the efforts to foster better practices are bearing fruit.

Commitment to Diversity

Among the standout performers is Mission 44, founded by Sir Lewis Hamilton to promote a fair and inclusive future for young people. Mission 44 has been awarded an A across the board, indicating its strong commitment to creating equitable opportunities, particularly in STEM fields. CEO Jason Arthur emphasized the foundation's focus on valuing diverse voices, which is central to their work.

Community Foundations Lead the Way

This year's results also highlight the exceptional performance of community foundations, all of which received A or B ratings. Emma de Closset, Chief Executive of UK Community Foundations, noted that their approach to funding—grounded in local contexts and responsive to community needs—has played a crucial role in these successes.

While challenges remain, the overall trend in the sector is encouraging. Danielle Walker Palmour, Director of Friends Provident Foundation, pointed out that the improvements in grading are promising news for the charities that rely on these foundations for support.
