Remarkable Recovery: Orphaned Mountain Lion Cubs Thrive in Their New Homes

In a heartwarming tale from Portola Valley, three orphaned mountain lion cubs named Fern, Thistle, and Spruce have overcome adversity and found their forever homes after a challenging beginning. These cubs were rescued when their mother went missing, presumed to have been struck by a vehicle. Subsequently, they received the necessary care at the Oakland Zoo, where their journey toward recovery began.

Spruce's Successful Journey

Spruce, one of the trio, is particularly thriving in his new environment at the Birmingham Zoo’s Alabama Wilds area. Initially weighing 33 pounds at his rescue, Spruce has significantly increased his weight, reaching an impressive 85 pounds by December 2025. His daily diet consists of almost 4 pounds of meat, which he relishes as he grows stronger and more energetic.
