Exciting developments are underway in Great Harwood as plans for a new Home Bargains store and garden centre have finally received the green light. A Long-Awaited Approval

The proposal for the Home Bargains development was initially submitted in 2024, highlighting a vision for transforming a “blighted” corner of Great Harwood. Following extensive discussions and necessary legal clearances, the planning committee of Hyndburn Borough Council granted outline planning permission in June 2024, which has now progressed to full approval. Local councillors have eagerly noted that all planning complications have been addressed, paving the way for upcoming construction activities.

Economic Boost and Job Creation

The newly approved development is expected to bring about substantial economic rejuvenation to Great Harwood and the surrounding Hyndburn area. With an estimated cost of £6 million, it is projected to create between 70 and 80 new jobs for locals, making a significant impact on employment in the region. Local representatives have expressed their optimism, stating that the project's successful execution will support sustainable planning and community growth.

Features of the Development

The Home Bargains store will be situated on the site of a former gas works and will feature a spacious layout, including a garden centre that spans 2,232 sqm internally and 932 sqm externally. Additionally, plans incorporate ample parking—151 spaces, including dedicated areas for disabled drivers and parents with children. To promote environmentally friendly practices, the layout also includes provisions for cycle parking and electric vehicle charging stations.

Local officials, including Councillor Stewart Eaves, have termed this initiative as “good news,” envisioning a brighter future for the area that has faced challenges for many years.
