Reviving Memories: How Art is Transforming Lives in Care Homes

In an inspiring initiative, a Derby couple are bringing joy and color to the lives of dementia patients through their art. Arjun Pren and Adithya Lakshmi KR, founders of HOBO Designs, have launched a project called "Living in Memories," focusing on improving mental health and evoking cherished memories for care home residents.

A Creative Solution to a Common Challenge

Relocating from India to the UK for their fine arts education, Arjun and Adithya were struck by the stark environment of care homes. They felt the emotional weight of these spaces that often resembled hospitals rather than homes. With this in mind, they sought to make a difference by painting murals that reflect the life stories of residents.

Bringing Stories to Life

Their approach involves engaging deeply with the individuals they are creating for. Arjun explains, “We would gather as much information as possible about a person, speak with their families, and source old photographs to bring their story to life on the walls." This thoughtful process has resulted in profound effects on residents, many of whom have been able to recollect significant moments from their past.

Emotional Reactions and Heartwarming Successes

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project has been witnessing the reactions of the residents when they first see their murals. “Many of them are dementia patients, but they remembered their old memories,” Arjun shared, recalling the heartfelt responses that often follow. Families have expressed immense gratitude, with some even purchasing artwork to honor the memory of lost loved ones.

A Vision for the Future

After successfully completing projects in three care homes, Arjun and Adithya aim to expand their initiative, inviting more care homes in Derby to participate. They passionately believe in the power of their work to enhance the quality of life for residents and combat memory loss. “The positive impact on their mental health is tremendous,” they concluded, highlighting the joy their work brings to everyone involved.

This endeavor is not just about murals; it is about restoring dignity, evoking cherished memories, and celebrating life stories. Arjun and Adithya are making a lasting impact, proving that creativity and compassion can go hand in hand to change lives for the better.
