The European Commission has recently launched an ambitious €400 million initiative aimed at transforming the industrial heat landscape across the continent. With the successful acceptance of 65 projects from ten EU member states, the commission is steering a proactive response to the pressing challenges of climate change. If successful, these innovative technologies are projected to save an astonishing 6.6 million tons of CO2 emissions over a decade, alongside the potential equivalent savings of 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas over five years. Local Heroes in the Energy Transition

Among these pioneering efforts, notable examples can already be seen in cities like Hamburg and Varanto. The Aurubis copper smelter in Hamburg has turned its waste heat into a resource, supplying hot water to around 28,000 homes and saving 120,000 tons of CO2 annually. Meanwhile, Varanto's innovative thermal exchange system stores waste heat from data centers for future use, showcasing how urban environments can leverage excess heat to decarbonize residential heating during winter months.
